What types of therapies do you provide?

Although there are a variety of potentially helpful therapy modalities, Dr. Angel focus on empirically-validated treatments such as behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These therapies aim to provide clients with noticeable symptom reduction and enhanced quality of life in a relatively short amount of time. These are active, practical, and engaged forms of therapy– which focus on making positive changes in one’s current life.

As an evidence-based therapist, he will collaboratively set measurable treatment goals and check on their progress throughout our work together. He asks his clients to complete brief questionnaires at regular intervals in order to have a clear sense of how helpful therapy has been. With this feedback, he can tailor the treatment specifically to the client’s needs and increase the efficiency of therapy.

I already have an individual therapist but would like more therapy. Can I see you too?

Dr. Angel wants to offer you the best possible care. He would only agree to do so under extremely rare and proscribed circumstances in which he, in collaboration with your other providers, believed this could be of benefit to you.

What can I expect at the first session?

In advance of our first session, Dr. Angel will ask you to read and sign documents related to your rights and obligations, consent to treatment, and confidentiality.  He will address any questions or concerns you have about these issues in our first session. If you do give consent to begin treatment, the first session also includes an assessment in which he will ask you to identify areas with which you would like assistance and your goals in treatment. You will also be asked to complete demographic information, and information about your personal history and current symptoms.

An important part of our first meeting is also beginning to develop a collaborative partnership and seeing whether the services offered fit your needs. If my expertise and your needs do not match up, I would be happy to give you recommendations to other providers.

What is a typical therapy session like?

Dr. Angel typically meets weekly and you work together to plan the session for that day.  You will first review how things have gone for you since the last session and then set an agenda for the therapy session. You will review any out of session practice that occurred since your last session. The sessions may often involve evaluating beliefs and behaviors that may be contributing to your current problems and helping you engage in more helpful ways of thinking or responding. You may spend time in session reviewing specific skills that may help you better meet your goals through didactic techniques, in-session demonstrations, or role-plays.
